On Sunday 21st September 2014, thousands took to the streets of London protesting for global action againstclimate change as part of a coordinated action around the world involving 162 countries. The People's Climate March was followed by the UN Climate Summit 2014 on the 23rd September in New York, where 400,000 people marched two days before.
Jessica Walsh, member and former Vice President of Energise Cambridge, attended the march in London (see image opposite).
The scale of the march reflects an increased sense of urgency about the future of our planet and the lack of immediate action by governments and industry. After recent failures to form global agreements on action against climate change, notably the 2009 UN summit in Copenhagen, the pressure was on for world leaders to demonstrate serious commitment for desperately needed climate action.
The summit addressed many keys issues including ambitious targets for fuel efficiency, reducing deforestation and encouraging green investment by the financial and investment industries. China, the country with the largest annual carbon dioxide emissions, has set out clear aims for the first time to increase carbon efficiency by 2020.
The next United Nations Climate Change Conference will take place in November 2015 in Paris.
Who are we? We are students who care about climate change and are campaigning the University to reduce their carbon emissions (the fourth highest of any University in the UK!).
